Emergency crews responded Friday night around 8:15 PM to a serious crash on Route 422 westbound at the Schuylkill River Bridge, just before Lancaster Avenue.

Initial reports indicated a vehicle struck the median and went off the bridge, landing roughly 200 feet down the embankment near the river and catching fire.

Firefighters arriving on scene confirmed the vehicle was fully engulfed. After extinguishing the flames, firefighters used a stokes basket lowered from the bridge to lift the patient back up to the roadway for medical care. The driver, who suffered extensive injuries, was transported to the hospital. Their condition is not yet known.

A short time later, a tow company lifted what appeared to be a large SUV back up from the woods onto the highway.

Fire police shut down the highway for several hours during the rescue, directing traffic onto alternate routes around the scene.
