The City of Reading officially broke ground Monday on a new solar energy project at the Public Works campus as part of its goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2050.

City officials, members of Reading City Council, Sustainability Manager Bethany Ayers Fisher, and representatives from Schneider Electric gathered for the ceremony at the Public Works Building on North Sixth Street.

The project will include more than 4,200 solar panels across city facilities, including solar canopies at the Public Works campus and the City Hall Cedar Street parking lot. Officials said the project is expected to reduce long-term energy costs, offset electricity usage at municipal buildings, and help stabilize the city’s energy budget.

Speakers during the event highlighted the project’s environmental and financial impact, including projected annual savings and efforts to reduce air pollution while modernizing city infrastructure.
