Wilson Senior Hayden Wolf takes first flight with Reading Aero Club

Wilson High School senior and Reading Regional Airport intern Hayden Wolf experienced his first flight in a small general aviation aircraft with Reading Aero Club Flight Instructor Paul Jones last week after the Reading Aviation Expo press conference.

Aboard a Piper Dakota, Jones flew a route north of Blue Mountain, over the city of Reading, and even circled Hayden’s home near Blue Marsh. During the flight, Hayden was given a few minutes at the controls under Jones’ supervision to try straight-and-level flight and simple turns — a first taste of what it feels like to fly.

“This was actually my first time ever in a small general aviation plane,” Hayden said. “Seeing my hometown from 4,000 feet was a completely surreal experience. I had a really, really fun time.”

Wolf, who plans to pursue a career as an airline or corporate pilot, credited the Aero Club for inspiring his aviation journey. Jones offered advice to aspiring pilots: “Pursue your passion, but also have a backup plan. Aviation is the best job in the world, but sometimes it can be the worst career in the world when the business cycles turn.”

Founded in 1929, the Reading Aero Club is the oldest continuously operating flying club in America. Today it has about 50 pilot members, three aircraft, and a strong commitment to supporting aviation education and community events.

The Reading Aviation Expo is scheduled for October 10–11, 2025, featuring a free aviation career fair, the WEEU Hangar Party, and the Aeros & Autos Car Show.
