Big Boy No. 4014
Thousands of railfans lined the tracks Thursday as Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 made its highly anticipated stop at Reading Outer Station in Muhlenberg Township during its Semiquincentennial Steam Celebration tour with the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad. The historic steam locomotive drew large crowds from across the region, with spectators gathering hours in advance for the rare opportunity to see one of the world’s largest operating steam locomotives in person. The extreme heat also took a toll on some attendees. Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the event after several people experienced heat-related medical issues while waiting in the high temperatures.
