The Reading Police Department is offering a limited number of free steering wheel locks to members of the community.

The locks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Residents can pick one up at the Reading Police Department, 815 Washington St., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Those interested should see the desk sergeant upon arrival.

Police are also reminding residents to take precautions as colder weather approaches and more drivers may be warming up their vehicles before leaving home.

The department advises drivers not to leave a running vehicle unlocked or unattended with the keys inside. Police said taking simple steps to secure a vehicle can help reduce opportunities for theft.
