Residents in Berks County may notice some of Pennsylvania’s familiar blue-and-gold historical markers missing from their posts as the state conducts routine restoration work ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission announced that Berks County is among four eastern Pennsylvania counties included in the agency’s current cycle of historical marker maintenance. Chester, Northampton and Philadelphia counties are also included.
According to PHMC, markers temporarily removed in Berks County have not been permanently taken down. The markers are being carefully uninstalled and transported in batches to an off-site facility for restoration.
The work can include welding, structural repairs, sandblasting and a fresh coat of paint. Because markers are restored in batches, PHMC said it may take several weeks before an individual marker is returned to its location.
“Pennsylvania’s Historical Markers are vital storytelling tools that reflect the diverse and vibrant history of our communities,” said Andrea MacDonald, director of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office. “We are dedicated to maintaining these markers to ensure they remain pristine and legible for visitors and future generations. We are deeply committed to preserving these stories, and these specific markers will be reinstalled as soon as their structural and cosmetic refurbishment is complete.”
PHMC maintains more than 2,500 historical markers across Pennsylvania. Each year, the commission selects five to seven counties for cyclical maintenance.
While a marker is being restored, its empty post will remain at the site with a yellow vinyl tag indicating that the marker was officially removed for maintenance.
The restoration work comes as Pennsylvania welcomes visitors for events surrounding the United States Semiquincentennial, marking the 250th anniversary of the nation in 2026.
