Reading Area Community College will receive $625,000 in state funding for two facility improvement projects, including work at the Schmidt Training and Technology Center and Berks Hall.
The funding was announced Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as part of more than $25.4 million awarded to 14 community colleges across the state for capital projects and renovations.
RACC will receive $475,000 for compaction grouting at the Schmidt Training and Technology Center and $150,000 for a fire pump at Berks Hall.
State Rep. Manuel Guzman, D-Berks, welcomed the funding, saying the projects would support facilities used by local students.
“It is really gratifying to see these investments in our community colleges because they strengthen the facilities our students and communities rely on every day,” Guzman said. “Community colleges expand educational opportunities, support workforce development, and help prepare students for the future. Investing in these institutions is an investment in our students, our workforce and the continued progress of our communities.”
The grants are intended to support projects including major repairs, deferred maintenance, renovations or replacement of aging facilities, accessibility improvements and facilities serving workforce development and growing student populations.
“Community colleges open doors for Pennsylvanians at every stage of life, whether they are earning a first credential, preparing for a career, or continuing their education,” Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe said. “When we invest in safe, modern facilities, we invest in the students who learn there, the educators who teach there, and the communities and employers that depend on them.”
The state said nearly $137 million has been invested in capital improvement projects at Pennsylvania community colleges since Gov. Josh Shapiro took office.
