The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Berks County for Thursday, with hot and humid conditions expected to push heat index values as high as 100 degrees.
The advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. In addition to Berks County, the advisory covers portions of Chester and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania and several counties in New Jersey.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas when possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.
Those who need to spend time outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and consider limiting strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. The National Weather Service also advises people to take action if they notice symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.
