Reading Hospital expands electrophysiology lab to advance cardiac care

Patients across Berks County and the surrounding region now have greater access to advanced treatment for heart rhythm disorders following an expansion of Reading Hospital’s Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory at the Miller Heart Center.

Made possible through a $4.6 million philanthropic investment raised by the Reading Hospital Foundation, the expansion increases capacity for specialized cardiac procedures and strengthens access to care close to home.

“This project demonstrates what is possible when a community invests in its own healthcare future,” said Katherine Thornton, President of the Reading Hospital Foundation. “The generosity of our donors made this expansion possible and will help more patients receive life-saving cardiac care close to home.”

Heart rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation, can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other serious health complications. The expanded EP Lab enhances Reading Hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat these conditions, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for advanced care.

The upgraded space enables physicians and care teams to perform more advanced procedures, including catheter ablations, cardiac device implantations, and other minimally invasive treatments.

“With cardiovascular disease remaining one of the leading health challenges facing our community, this expansion allows us to meet growing demand for highly specialized cardiac services,” said Dr. Charles F. Barbera, President and CEO of Reading Hospital. “The support of our donors has enhanced our ability to provide advanced care to more patients when and where they need it.”

Reading Hospital and the Reading Hospital Foundation recently celebrated the completion of the project with a dedication event recognizing the donors, physicians, staff, and community leaders who helped make the expansion possible.
