The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Berks County beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday and remaining in effect through Monday evening, warning that multiple rounds of heavy rain could lead to flooding and flash flooding across the region.
Forecasters said flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible as showers and thunderstorms move through the area overnight and into Monday.
Rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are possible in the heaviest storms. Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches possible. Those higher totals could lead to flash flooding, particularly in areas that receive repeated rounds of heavy rain.
The National Weather Service said excessive runoff may cause rivers, creeks and streams to rise out of their banks. Flooding is also possible in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as locations with poor drainage and urban streets.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared for the possibility of Flood Warnings if conditions worsen. Those who live in areas prone to flooding should be ready to take action if flooding develops.
Motorists are urged to use caution during periods of heavy rain and should never drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow moving water can sweep away a vehicle, and it is often impossible to determine the depth of water covering a road.
