Customers served by the North Heidelberg water system are being asked to immediately reduce their water use after the Reading Area Water Authority declared a drought emergency for the system and implemented mandatory conservation measures.

According to a notice shared Friday, July 31, the Reading Area Water Authority has placed the North Heidelberg system under a drought emergency and issued a mandatory water conservation notice requiring customers to reduce water usage by 15%.

Under the restrictions, nonessential water use is prohibited until further notice.

Prohibited activities include watering lawns and other outdoor areas, irrigating golf courses, washing vehicles, washing paved surfaces or other outdoor areas, filling or topping off swimming pools, and serving water in restaurants unless a customer specifically requests it.

The authority said it will notify customers when the restrictions are lifted and asked for the public’s cooperation in conserving water during the drought emergency.

The mandatory conservation measures apply to customers served by the North Heidelberg water system. No additional details about the duration of the restrictions were immediately provided.
