Bern Township homeowner dies after tree limb strikes him during yard work

A Bern Township man died Tuesday evening after a tree limb struck him while he was trimming a tree from a ladder, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel said the incident occurred at 5:09 p.m. on June 30, when the Berks County 911 Center received a report of a fall victim at the rear of a residence in the 1000 block of Mahlon Drive in Bern Township.

According to the investigation, 80-year-old Donald Paul Glass was using a pole saw while standing on a ladder when a tree limb fell and struck him, causing both him and the ladder to fall to the ground.

Glass was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berks County Coroner’s Office at 5:53 p.m.

The coroner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma and traumatic asphyxiation. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Berks County Coroner’s Office.
