Heat advisory issued for Berks County as temperatures near 100-degree heat index

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for Berks County and several surrounding areas through 8 p.m. Tuesday, as forecasters warn of dangerous heat and humidity during what is expected to be one of the hottest stretches of the year so far.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could reach as high as 97 degrees during the afternoon and early evening hours Monday and Tuesday. In Pennsylvania, the advisory includes Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Upper Bucks, Western Chester, and Western Montgomery counties.

Forecasters said record-setting high temperatures are possible through Tuesday, with heat index values ranging from the mid-90s to near 100 degrees during peak daytime heating.

The National Weather Service noted that the early-season heat may have a greater impact because many people are not yet acclimated to prolonged hot and humid conditions. Officials warned that hot temperatures combined with high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid prolonged time in direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors, especially older adults and those without access to cooling.

Relief from the heat is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon and evening, when showers and thunderstorms are forecast to move through the region.
