A Memorial Day ceremony honoring fallen service members is planned for Monday, May 25, at Jim Dietrich Park in Muhlenberg Township.

The event, organized by the Muhlenberg Township Parks & Recreation Department, will begin at 9 a.m. near the park’s flagpole at 4899 Stoudts Ferry Bridge Road.

According to township officials, the program will feature remarks from Robert Souders, MGySgt, USMC (Ret.), outreach coordinator and veterans service officer for Berks County Veterans Affairs, along with State Rep. Jacklyn Rusnock and State Sen. Judy Schwank.

Boy Scout Troops 161 and 155 will conduct the posting of the colors, while a brass ensemble from Muhlenberg High School, directed by Nathan Mohler, will provide musical selections. The ceremony will also include the performance of taps and a recitation of “A Soldier’s Legacy” by Muhlenberg High School student Ashley De Los Santos.

Organizers said wreaths will be laid in honor of Gold Star families, each branch of the military, and military police and firefighters.

Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be served at the Steve Landes Pavilion. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view a fully restored 1942 military Jeep on display during the event.

Residents attending are encouraged to bring their own chairs. In the event of rain, all portions of the ceremony will move to Pavilion 2 at Jim Dietrich Park.
