Two Berks County volunteers were among those honored by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission during its 2025 Volunteers of the Year awards ceremony, recognizing individuals who contribute to preserving the Commonwealth’s history.

The ceremony was held April 25 at Cornwall Iron Furnace in Lebanon County, where a total of 27 volunteers from across Pennsylvania were recognized for their service.

Among the honorees, Louise Griffiths of the Daniel Boone Homestead was named a Volunteer of the Year for her contributions during the 2025 calendar year. The award highlights individuals who have made a significant impact at PHMC sites and museums through their volunteer efforts.

Also recognized was Brian Beamesderfer of the Conrad Weiser Homestead, who received an Outstanding Service Award for his long-term dedication to the site and its mission. This distinction is given to volunteers who have demonstrated sustained commitment over many years.

In total, 20 individuals were named Volunteers of the Year, while seven received Outstanding Service Awards for extended service across the state’s network of historic sites, known as the Pennsylvania Trails of History.

“Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our historic sites and museums, and their work has never been more significant than it is today,” said PHMC Executive Director Andrea Lowery. “They are a vital link between our shared history and the communities we serve. As the Commonwealth takes center stage for America’s 250th birthday, we are grateful to these Pennsylvanians who dedicate their time and talents to ensuring our heritage is preserved with care, shared with passion and open to everyone.”

PHMC officials noted that the agency has relied on volunteers for more than a century to support preservation efforts and public programming. The annual awards ceremony, now in its 51st year, recognizes those who help keep Pennsylvania’s historical sites active and accessible to the public.
