Pickup truck driver killed in head-on crash with trash hauler in Cumru Township

A fatal crash involving a trash hauler and a pickup truck is under investigation after a head-on collision along Philadelphia Avenue (Route 724) in Cumru Township.

According to the Cumru Township Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched to the area of Valley Stream Road after initial reports indicated a serious crash with possible entrapment and fire.

Upon arrival, authorities determined that the driver of the pickup truck was deceased at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the trash hauler were evaluated by emergency medical services and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Philadelphia Avenue was closed between Valley Stream Road and Morgantown Road (Route 10) for an extended period while crews conducted an investigation and processed the scene.

Police said the crash remains under investigation with assistance from the Berks County District Attorney’s Crash Reconstruction Team. Preliminary information from witnesses and video evidence indicates the trash hauler was traveling eastbound on Philadelphia Avenue while the pickup truck was traveling westbound. Investigators believe the pickup truck crossed the center line, resulting in a head-on collision.

The identities of those involved have not been released as authorities continue their investigation and notify next of kin.
