Morgantown Interchange to close overnight for toll booth demolition

September 12, 2025 - 06:04 PM - Berks Weekly

Motorists traveling through the Morgantown Interchange (Exit 298) on the Pennsylvania Turnpike should prepare for an overnight closure as crews remove the overhead toll gantry.

The interchange will be closed in both directions from midnight until 6 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Drivers will need to continue to the next exit and follow detours to reach their destinations.

The work is part of the PA Turnpike’s ongoing transition to Open Road Tolling (ORT), a cashless system that eliminates traditional toll booths. ORT allows drivers to travel at highway speeds while tolls are collected electronically through overhead gantries.

According to the Turnpike Commission, removing toll plazas improves safety and traffic flow by eliminating stop-and-go conditions at interchanges. Once the toll booths are fully demolished, each interchange will be reconstructed to allow for unobstructed travel. Reconstruction of interchanges east of Reading and along the Northeast Extension is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be on-site to assist motorists during the closure. Changeable message signs will also provide drivers with updates. Officials noted that work schedules may change depending on weather conditions.
