The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On September 2, 2025, Sheetz #289, located at 4661 Penn Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Fryer basket observed with a broken wire. Corrected.
On September 3, 2025, Spectators Bar & Grille, located at 45 Old Route 22, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available quat sanitizer test strips or quat test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Wrong test strips PH test strips were observed. Shelf below cookline was observed lined with cardboard. Cardboard is not smooth and easily cleanable and is a pest attractant. Corrected.
On September 3, 2025, Reiffton Fire Company, located at 46 West 33rd Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: There is a large liquid spill on the bottom of the Hoshizaki refrigerator in the hall storage area. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the glass washer (chlorine test strips). Ordered during this inspection.
On September 3, 2025, Kutztown Tavern, located at 272 West Main Street, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Three fryer baskets were observed with broken wires.
On September 3, 2025, The Bridge Inn, located at 3 Covered Bridge Road, Oley, was inspected and found with the following violation: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the salad bain marie unit. Corrected. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.
On September 4, 2025, The BBQ Trough MFF3/XNH-6344, located at 3 Daub Road, Myerstown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility is using an approved non-public water system but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability. Owner will conduct a water test and send results to PDA.
On September 4, 2025, Tavern at Centre and Main, located at 5 Centre Avenue, Topton, was inspected and found with the following violation: Ice machine kick plate was observed with black organic matter.
On September 4, 2025, Star Gas & Diesel, located at 8558 Lancaster Avenue, Bethel, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility is using an approved non-public water system but does not have current laboratory testing results for nitrates/nitrites. Partner will have tested and will send results to PDA. One half gallon and one gallon of milk observed with an expiration date of 9/3/25 were in the customer facing cooler for sale. Corrected and removed.
On September 4, 2025, Shepherd’s Touch Farm, located at 233 Gunhart Road, Mohnton, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food Facility receiving shell eggs which are not labeled properly and/or do not contain safe handling instructions. Labeling missing name and location of business and lay date. Corrected. PIC disposed of 3 dozen duck eggs.
On September 5, 2025, Smucker’s Farm Fresh Poultry, located at 845 Woodland Road, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: Ceiling tile missing in the back food preparation area needs to be replaced. Working container (spray bottle) in the 3-compartment sink area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On September 5, 2025, New Jerusalem Inn & Event Center, located at 11 Deysher Road, Fleetwood, was inspected and found with the following violation: The interior kick plate of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have black/pink organic build up and in need of cleaning. The handwash sink located in the cookline area does not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. Water that came out was only cold-water, hot water spigot had no water. Water temperature was 69°F. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired 12/18/2022 and is no longer valid. The other certificate that is displayed is for an employee that no longer works at the facility and must be taken down. Facility must have a food safety manager certification for a current employee. Excessive fruit fly activity observed in the bar area. Please dispose of garbage every night and do not leave standing water as these are pest harborage areas. Floor in the cookline area, is made of stone, and is not durable, smooth, non-porous, non-absorbent. The stones are broken, and the floor has a hole that you can see into the basement this is not smooth and easily cleanable and must be repaired.
On September 5, 2025, Little Oley Tavern, located at 2068 Farmington Avenue, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: The facility was listed as out of compliance. Lemons and Limes in the refrigerator in the outside bar area stored open with no covering. Fruits to add to mixed drink was held at 56 °F, in the outside area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Pickled vegetable was held at 62°F, in the inside bar area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Roast Beef was held at 122°F, in the hot hold unit in the bar area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerator, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Observed single use plastic food containers being reused to store food products throughout the kitchen area. Two insect control (fly Trap) devices located in the kitchen area with potential to contaminate food, equipment, and/or utensils.
On September 5, 2025, Little Caesars, located at 502 Lancaster Avenue, Shillington, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a buildup of old food residue on the walls and nonfood contact surfaces of the dough machine and apparent mold build up on the PVC piping of the handwash sink. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked. Corrected. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed the base of the faucet leaking at the 3-bay sink.

On September 8, 2025, Papa John’s #3074, located at 828B Route 100, Bechtelsville, was inspected and found with the following violation: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the employee restroom area to remind food employees to wash their hands. This is a repeat violation and needs to be addressed. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The handwash sink in the dish area does not have single use towel dispenser, continuous towels, or air-drying device. This is a repeat violation and needs to be addressed.
On September 9, 2025, Spring 950 Inc, located at 948 North 8th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Hot prepared food was held at 86.5 °F, in the hot holding area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Cleaning frequency needs to be increased. The kitchen area needs to scrub and degreased. Counter, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodents/insect activity in store front areas, but facility does not have a pest control program.

On September 9, 2025, Boyer’s Food Market #3568, located at 410 North 3rd Street, Womelsdorf, was inspected and found with the following violation: The handwash sink in the deli area was blocked by cart and not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. The quaternary ammonia concentration in the sanitizing solution of the 3-bay warewash sink was 0 ppm, rather than 150-400 ppm as stated on the manufacturers use directions. Corrected. Non-food contact surfaces of yogurt reach in cooler not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Non-food contact surface of the spray nozzle in the deli area sink is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Meat department sink does not have an adequate air gap of at least 1 inch, between the water supply and flood rim of the sink. Wall and floor in the walk-in cooler in the seafood area of the food facility was observed dirty, with debris build up and in need of cleaning.

On September 10, 2025, Pine Forge Academy (High School), located at 361 Pine Forge Road, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed vents throughout the kitchen area, with an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces. Observed ice build-up in the back of the walk-in-freezer fans that is getting into the food stored below it. Observed 3 severely dented cans in the area and intended for use in the food facility. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in-cooler and storage area, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened.
On September 10, 2025, Hong Kong, located at 51 King Plaza, Oley, was inspected and found with the following violation: There is fire extinguisher residue on non-food contact surfaces in the area near the fryers. Employees are in the process of cleaning all surfaces. Cooking equipment and other food contact surfaces have fire extinguisher residue. Employees are in the process of cleaning all surfaces.
On September 10, 2025, Guru Sub & Grocery Store, located at 1731 Cotton Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Frozen Food in the freezer area stored open with no covering. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the counter area. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the counter area. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli counter, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Mops are not being hung to air dry. No soap available in the employee’s bathroom, the cleanliness of the bathroom needs to be improved.
On September 10, 2025, 15th & Cotton Food Mart, located at 1521 Cotton Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the counter area. Milk in the cooler expiration date had expired. Frozen Food in the freezer area stored open with no covering. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli counter, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened.
