The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On August 8, 2025, Wingstop, located at 3258 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food employees observed in food prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Corrected on inspection.
On August 8, 2025, San’s Asian Food, located at 2934 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Raw eggs were stored above ready to eat foods in the refrigerator. Corrected on inspection. Soiled pans observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Corrected on inspection.
On August 8, 2025, Adelphia Seafood, located at 2934 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violations: Prepackaged food is not labeled properly with the name of product, ingredient statement, net weight, distributed by statement and/or nutritional facts. Prepackaged food is not labeled to clearly indicate any “Big 8” allergen ingredients and / or the allergen warning statement.
On August 11, 2025, The Van Reed Inn, located at 2707 Bernville Road, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Dishes will need to be sanitizer in the three compartment sink until the dish machine is repaired. Interior kick plate of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have pink and black organic matter and was not clean to sight and touch. Ice needs to be burned and the interior needs to be washed, rinsed, and sanitized. Potato dicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have encrusted food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Interior of the microwave is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Corrected. Underside of the dish sprayer was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of debris and soil.
On August 11, 2025, Reading Country Club, located at 5311 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the 4-drawer Continental refrigeration unit in the main kitchen. Corrected. Food facility does not have available method to verify the final rinse temperature for the hot water sanitizing dishwasher in the banquet kitchen. The slicer in the banquet kitchen, a food contact surface, was observed to have dried food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Plastic forks in the snack bar area not displayed in a manner so that only the handles are touched when dispensed. Corrected. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the bar area. Corrected. Working container (spray bottle) in the banquet kitchen, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On August 11, 2025, Camp Conrad Weiser, located at 201 Cushion Peak Road, Reinholds, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food contact surface of * two rubber spatulas were not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected, PIC threw them away. Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. PIC is having the team sanitize in the 3-bay sink until the service company comes to fix the dish machine. Insert pans (3) were observed with sticker residue on the outside of the container. Pans were stacked putting residue on the food contact surface. Corrected, PIC removed sticker residue and re washed containers.
On August 12, 2025, Simply Bold, located at 550 Penn Avenue, West Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: A food employee was observed touching a sandwich – a ready to eat food – with bare hands. Corrected. Working containers (spray bottes), used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On August 12, 2025, Courtyard by Marriott, located at 150 North Park Road, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Manager called for service for the dishwasher. Facility will be sanitizing all dishes in the 3-compartment sink until the dishwasher is working properly. Customer self-service single-use tableware near the front desk is not displayed in a manner so that only the handles are touched by customers. Corrected. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the front area. Corrected. Automatic paper towel dispenser in the kitchen area is not working properly. Corrected. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the front area. Corrected.
On August 13, 2025, Burger King #7166, located at 1197 Berkshire Boulevard, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have a method to verify the final rinse temperature for the hot water sanitizing dishwasher. There is an accumulation of ice in the small Silver King refrigerator near the fryers. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Old food debris and dirt observed on the floors under equipment/shelves and on counters/shelving units throughout the kitchen.
Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Weisser’s Delicatessen in Muhlenberg Township, Kutztown Grange Stand @ Kutztown Fair, J & F Seafood in Reading, Julianas in Sinking Spring (Type 2 Follow-up), Fairfield Inn & Suites in Wyomissing, Drover’s Grind in Centerport, Vitamin Shoppe #170 in Wyomissing, Jake’s Shakes in Barto, Womelsdorf Pool Snack Bar, Lily’s Vineyard in Reading, CVS #01769 in Leesport.
