Harmful algal bloom advisory issued for Blue Marsh Lake

July 3, 2025 - 04:21 PM - Berks Weekly

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Philadelphia District has elevated the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) status at Blue Marsh Lake from a “Watch” to an “Advisory” due to the presence of moderate levels of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.

The advisory, issued July 3, warns lake visitors of the potential for harmful toxins in the water. Officials are urging the public to avoid contact with discolored water, surface scum, or visible algae mats, which may signal the presence of harmful algal blooms.

“Children and pets are particularly vulnerable,” the Corps noted in the announcement. Visitors are advised not to allow children or animals to swim in or drink from affected areas and to rinse thoroughly with fresh water if contact with potentially contaminated water occurs.

Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that pose health risks to both humans and animals. Symptoms of exposure can vary but may include skin irritation, nausea, or more serious health effects depending on the level and type of toxin present.

The USACE continues to monitor conditions at Blue Marsh Lake and encourages the public to stay informed by visiting its Harmful Algal Bloom Information page at www.nap.usace.army.mil.
