The LGBT Center of Greater Reading is calling on the community to support a trio of fundraising events this July, as the organization faces urgent financial challenges that could impact its ability to operate beyond September.
Known for providing mental health counseling, case management, and support services to LGBTQ+ individuals across Berks County, the Center is turning to the public to help raise funds and ensure its programs remain accessible to those who rely on them.
“These events are more than fundraisers, they are lifelines,” said Laura Biancone, Executive Director of the LGBT Center of Greater Reading. “Every ticket purchased and every meal enjoyed brings us closer to securing our future and continuing the critical work we do for the LGBTQ+ community.”
The first event kicks off on Friday, July 18, with a take-out fundraiser hosted by the Torres-Figueroa Family at the Puerto Rican Civic Association, 233 S. 4th Street in Reading. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., guests can purchase a $20 meal featuring baked chicken, white rice and beans, and a fresh salad. All proceeds will benefit the Center’s local programming.
The following evening, on Saturday, July 19, the Center will host Sip, Sashay & Support at Emily’s Event Venue. Running from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., the event features a high-energy drag performance, food, and a festive atmosphere. Tickets are $30 and include entry and a meal, with additional drink tickets available at the door. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash for tipping performers.
In August, the Center will present an exclusive private screening of Ponyboi, a Sundance-selected film that follows the journey of a young intersex runaway. The screening is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26, at 7 p.m., with venue details and ticket information to be announced on the Center’s website.
Proceeds from all three events will go directly toward sustaining the Center’s counseling, advocacy, and support services for the LGBTQ+ community.
