The Borough of Wyomissing has announced its biggest event of the year—the Annual Independence Day Parade & Celebration, taking place on Friday, July 4th, 2025, and promising a day packed with music, memories, and hometown pride.
The celebration truly begins the night before, as the skies above Wyomissing explode with color during the Annual Fireworks Show. The dazzling display takes place on Thursday, July 3rd at 10:15 PM, lighting up the night sky over the Wyomissing Pool. This crowd-favorite event brings families and friends together under the stars and sets the tone for a full day of festivities to follow.
Leading this year’s parade is none other than Philadelphia’s legendary Greater Kensington String Band, one of the most celebrated acts from the world-famous Mummers Parade. Since 1946, “Greater K” has been dazzling crowds with their colorful costumes, iconic Mummer’s strut, and signature sound. Parade Captain Shawn Blubaugh shared his excitement, saying, “We can’t wait to come back to Wyomissing. There’s nothing quite like the joy and pride this community brings by lining the streets and cheering us on—it’s an energy we never forget.”
Joining the musical celebration will be the Buccaneers Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps, Reading Philharmonic Band, Hawk Mountain Highlanders, Pretzel City Dixieland Jazz Band, The Happy Dutchmen German Band, Hamilton Celtic Pipe Band, and the ever-popular Rajah Chanters—each delivering a rousing soundtrack to our nation’s birthday.
This year’s parade promises something for everyone, with a wide range of participants joining the march through Wyomissing. Keep an eye out for local pageant winners, proud WWII veterans, Scout troops, antique and classic cars, fire trucks from area fire departments, and appearances by the Reading Royals, Fightin’ Phils, and even high school class reunions reconnecting with old friends. Whether you come to honor our heroes, cheer for your team, or wave to the grandkids, there’s something nostalgic and heartwarming in every moment.
This year’s Parade Grand Marshal is a true American hero: Betty O’Connell, a proud Navy veteran and lifelong nurse. A Reading native, Betty joined the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in 1945, serving as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class at a California naval hospital where she cared for wounded Pacific Navy personnel. She still has the original nurse’s dress she wore during that time—complete with the marks of history still visible. Now a beloved resident of the Highlands at Wyomissing, Betty continues to uplift others by visiting neighbors and taking part in community life.
Wyomissing Mayor Fred Levering spoke to the heart of the celebration: “The Fourth of July in Wyomissing is more than just a celebration—it’s a homecoming. It’s a day where generations come together to wave flags, share memories, and remind us what community truly means. We’re proud to keep this tradition alive and stronger than ever.”
The celebration officially kicks off at 9:30 AM, when longtime community member Coach Tim Hetrich fires his replica 18th-century flintlock musket, marking the start of the Firecracker Family Fun Run. This spirited 1.2-mile dash leads runners along the entire parade route, ending triumphantly at the Stone House—just in time for the parade step-off at 10:00 AM.
As the parade winds through the streets, families line the sidewalks waving flags, cheering on floats, and enjoying the camaraderie of this proud Wyomissing tradition. For those with mobility challenges, designated handicapped parking and a special viewing area will be available at Reading Boulevard and Forest Avenue to ensure everyone can enjoy the festivities comfortably and safely.
The fun doesn’t stop after the last fire truck rolls by. Join the community on the Stone House Lawn for an afternoon of activities including bounce houses, games, food concessions, and the always hilarious and highly competitive Pie-Eating Contest, where one lucky winner will claim the coveted trophy and bragging rights.
In case of inclement weather, all festivities—including the Firecracker Fun Run, Parade, Stone House Celebration, and Fireworks Show—will be rescheduled to Saturday, July 5th.
The Wyomissing 4th of July Parade and Celebration isn’t just an event—it’s a tradition steeped in history, pride, and the power of community. Whether you’re returning home or experiencing it for the first time, Red, White, and YOU is your invitation to be part of something unforgettable.
