Update – 616/25: The contractor planned on setting beams for the new eastbound and westbound bridge spans over Route 143 on two separate occasions tonight and tomorrow night but have postponed the work two days due to inclement weather. The Route 143 closures will now occur between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM on June 18th for the eastbound bridge, and between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM June 19th for the westbound bridge, pending weather.
To detour, motorists traveling on Route 143 northbound are advised to use I-78 eastbound to Exit 40 (Kutztown/Krumsville) to I-78 Westbound to Exit 35 (Lenhartsville) and traveling on Route 143 southbound are advised to use I-78 westbound to Exit 30 (Hamburg) to I-78 eastbound to Exit 35 (Lenhartsville).
Also, there will be rolling slowdowns on Interstate 78 east and west near Exit 35 (Lenhartsville) from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM each night the beams are set.
As the project continues, ongoing coordination and updates with local Emergency Management Services (EMS) will occur.
Original post: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Bridging Pennsylvania Constructors (BPC) have announced upcoming overnight closures of Route 143 in Greenwich Township as part of the ongoing I-78 Lenhartsville Bridge Replacement Project.
The closures will allow crews to safely set beams for the new eastbound and westbound spans of the bridge that carries Interstate 78 over Route 143. Work is scheduled to take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on two consecutive nights, weather permitting. The eastbound span is expected to be addressed on or around June 16, followed by the westbound span on or around June 17.
During the closures, detours will be in place. Northbound Route 143 traffic will be directed to take I-78 east to Exit 40 (Kutztown/Krumsville), then westbound I-78 to Exit 35 (Lenhartsville). Southbound Route 143 travelers will be directed to I-78 west to Exit 30 (Hamburg), then eastbound I-78 to Exit 35.
In addition to the full closures on Route 143, motorists on I-78 should anticipate rolling slowdowns in both directions near Exit 35 during the overnight beam setting.
The Lenhartsville Bridge Replacement is part of PennDOT’s Major Bridges P3 Program, which aims to rehabilitate or replace critical bridges across the Commonwealth. Bridging Pennsylvania Developers – I (BPD-I), led by Shikun & Binui Ltd and Macquarie Capital, oversees the development. The construction team includes S&B USA Construction, FCC Construction, and regional subcontractors such as the H&K Group, Kokosing Construction, Wagman Heavy Civil, and lead designer Michael Baker International.
PennDOT will continue coordinating with local emergency services throughout the project to minimize impacts on emergency response.
