Preliminary water test results have indicated the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water system at the Berks County South Campus, located at 400 East Wyomissing Avenue in Mohnton.
According to a press release issued Tuesday by the County of Berks, staff were informed of the results earlier in the day, and immediate precautionary measures were put in place.
To ensure safety, county employees at the South Campus were dismissed for the day. The Berks County Facilities Department has arranged for portable bathrooms and enclosed supplies of potable drinking and utility water. All access to bathrooms and water inside the building is currently restricted.
Despite the detection of the bacteria, officials stated that the building remains safe for occupancy under current protocols, as long as alternative water and bathroom access is provided.
The South Campus buildings are scheduled to close over the weekend for chlorination of the water system.
Departments and agencies impacted by the temporary measures include: Area Agency on Aging, Assessment and Mapping, Workforce Development Board, Planning Commission, Industrial Development Authority, Berks County Redevelopment Authority, Community & Economic Development, Book Bonanza, County Archives and Office of Magisterial District Justice David Yoch.
The County said it is acting “out of an abundance of caution” and will continue to follow recommended health and safety protocols as it addresses the issue.
