Downtown Reading was buzzing with activity on Friday as two major events brought history, music, food, and community together on Penn Street.
The day began with the annual World War II Mid-Day Parade, presented in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum. Crowds gathered along the 500 block of Penn Street to see a lineup of authentic World War II vehicles, uniformed re-enactors, and a nostalgic live performance by the Snack Club Quartet.
Local officials and representatives from the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum offered remarks during the event, which served as the official kickoff to the museum’s 34th Annual World War II Weekend.
The parade drew families, veterans, and history enthusiasts who took photos with re-enactors, browsed displays, and enjoyed food from nearby vendors. The WWII Weekend continues through Sunday at the Reading Regional Airport, featuring air shows, vintage military equipment, and additional live entertainment.
Later in the evening, the city launched its 2025 First Friday Block Party season on the 600 block of Penn Street. The event transformed the downtown corridor into a lively hub of art, music, and local flavor. Live performances from Caya Sol and DJ Henry Houdini set the tone as attendees explored food trucks, shopped handmade goods from local creatives, and relaxed in the beer garden hosted by Pagoda City Brewing and Casa W Distillery.
The family-friendly atmosphere also included jumbo games, face painting, and a range of kid-focused activities, drawing residents of all ages into the celebration.
First Friday Block Parties will return on August 1 and September 5, continuing the city’s efforts to activate downtown Reading with vibrant, inclusive events throughout the summer.
