Demolition of former East Reading Pool set to begin as city prepares for new splash pad

Demolition work is scheduled to begin this week at the former East Reading Pool, marking the first step in the site’s transformation into a new recreational and community-focused area. The City of Reading is moving forward with plans to replace the long-closed pool with a splash pad and additional public parking.

The project follows City Council’s approval of a demolition contract on November 25, 2024. According to officials, early design plans feature a spacious splash pad for local families and a parking area with room for dozens of vehicles, aiming to better serve residents of the East Reading neighborhood.

“This redevelopment is a significant investment in our East Reading neighborhood,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “While the process will take time and require patience, we are confident the result will be a vibrant space that reflects our city’s commitment to community and quality of life.”

The redevelopment timeline outlines demolition beginning in May 2025, followed by a period of design finalization and grant applications later this year. Construction of the splash pad and parking area is expected to begin in 2026.

To ensure safety during demolition, temporary parking restrictions will be in place on the pool side of South 14½ Street. The restrictions are expected to last for approximately 36 working days—or up to two months—concluding by July 4, weather permitting. Work will occur on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and additional parking adjustments may be implemented as needed.
