Muhlenberg Township will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26, at 9:00 a.m. at Jim Dietrich Park, with a program designed to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.

The event, organized by the Muhlenberg Township Parks & Recreation Department, will take place near the park’s flagpole and will feature remarks from several community leaders and special guests. Gold Star son Stewart “Rusty” Lerch, whose father was killed in World War II, will be among the featured speakers. State Representative Jacklyn Rusnock is also scheduled to speak, along with township commissioners Mike Malinowski and Kevin Lerch.

The ceremony will open with the posting of the colors by Boy Scout Troops 161 and 155. Rev. Linda Kozlowski of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ will offer both the invocation and benediction.

Musical selections will be performed by a brass ensemble from Muhlenberg High School under the direction of Nathan Mohler. “Taps” will be played, and bagpiper Diana Cook will also perform. The program will include a recitation of the poem “MIA” by local author Dave Roslin, and a Muhlenberg High School student will present the patriotic reading “Freedom Isn’t Free.”

Wreaths will be laid in remembrance of Gold Star families, members of all military branches, and local police and firefighters. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony at the Steve Landes Pavilion.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. For more information, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 610-929-4727.
