The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) announced the appointment of Sarah Rivera, VMD as its new Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Rivera earned her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania and has spent the past several years at a private veterinary practice. Her professional interests have always included surgery and shelter medicine—two areas she is now excited to focus on in her new role.

“I’ve always had a passion for shelter medicine,” said Dr. Rivera. “I am excited to be part of the Animal Rescue League and I look forward to help further their mission through expanding our medical center and access to care for the animals of our community.”

Dr. Rivera’s appointment reflects ARL’s ongoing commitment to providing high quality affordable veterinary care and advancing its mission to care for animals, support families, and advocate for better lives for pets in Berks County.

“The addition of Dr. Rivera to our veterinary team provides the critical infrastructure needed to bring increased low-cost services to Berks County. Her passion for shelter medicine and community wellness services aligns with the ARL’s strategic objectives and we look forward to helping more pets and people through her service to the community.

Dr. Rivera joins Dr. Elisabeth Lopez and Dr. Hannah Wittorff in providing veterinary care to the over 5,000 pets served at the shelter each year.
