U.S. Army Corps announces service reductions at Blue Marsh Lake for 2025 season

Visitors to Blue Marsh Lake can expect reduced services and operational changes throughout the 2025 recreation season, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Philadelphia District, announced Friday.

The adjustments are being made due to staffing shortages resulting from a federal hiring freeze, which has prevented the agency from employing seasonal workers. Despite the reductions, USACE officials emphasized that essential operations, including flood protection and emergency response, will remain a priority.

“Our team of permanent staff remains committed to serving surrounding communities to conduct our primary mission, which is managing critical infrastructure for flood protection to downstream communities,” USACE officials said in a statement.

Key changes at the lake’s facilities include reduced hours and services at the popular Dry Brooks Day Use Area, which will now operate daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the swim beach closing at 5:00 PM. Entry to the area will not be permitted after 5:00 PM. Picnic pavilions, which were previously reservable, will now be available only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visitors can also expect changes at the boat launches. The Dry Brooks and State Hill boat ramps will close once they reach capacity on weekends and holidays, reopening after 5:00 PM. Additionally, the picnic area at Dry Brooks Boat Launch will be closed for the season, although the ramp itself will remain open for launching boats.

Other impacts include delayed or reduced maintenance of trails and facilities, as well as fewer outreach and interpretive programs.

Reduced hours at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area will begin on May 4, 2025. All other changes will take effect starting May 17, 2025.

USACE thanked the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation as the agency navigates these operational challenges.
