The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for parts of eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, in effect from Friday afternoon through Friday evening. Forecasters warn that gusty winds and low humidity levels are expected to create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread, urging residents to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor flames.
The watch includes the following counties: Carbon, Monroe, Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Delaware, Philadelphia, Chester (both eastern and western parts), Montgomery (both eastern and western), and Bucks (upper and lower portions).
According to the NWS, the fire weather watch comes as winds are anticipated to blow westward at 15-20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 28 percent, and temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 70s. These dry, windy conditions make it easier for fires to start and spread, increasing the risk for wildfires in the region.
The NWS cautions that any fire that develops could spread quickly under these conditions. Outdoor burning is highly discouraged, as even small flames or embers could ignite dry grass, leaves, and other natural fuels.
A Fire Weather Watch indicates that critical fire weather conditions are expected due to the combination of gusty winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates for potential upgrades to a Red Flag Warning, which would indicate imminent fire danger.
To reduce wildfire risks, officials recommend taking precautionary actions, such as avoiding open flames outdoors, refraining from discarding cigarettes improperly, and securing any items that may produce sparks.
