Mayor Morán announces Trick-or-Treat hours and safety tips for Halloween in Reading

The City of Reading has set official hours for trick-or-treating this Halloween, and Mayor Eddie Morán is calling on residents to help create a safe environment for young trick-or-treaters. The city’s official hours for trick-or-treating will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 31.

In an effort to ensure a smooth and enjoyable Halloween night, Mayor Morán has asked residents who plan to participate by handing out treats to turn on their porch lights during the designated hours. This simple gesture, he says, will help young trick-or-treaters easily identify welcoming homes. Additionally, drivers are encouraged to exercise extra caution as children in costumes will be crossing streets and navigating sidewalks throughout the city.

The city is also offering some important safety tips for families and trick-or-treaters, including:

  • Make costumes visible: Use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and treat bags to help drivers spot children in low light.
  • Avoid masks: Instead, opt for face paint or makeup, as masks can sometimes obscure a child’s vision.
  • Size costumes carefully: Ensure that costumes fit properly to prevent tripping and falling.
  • Light the way: Equip children with flashlights so they can see and be seen by others, including drivers.
  • Stick to sidewalks: Whenever possible, walk on sidewalks and cross streets at designated intersections and crosswalks, and avoid walking in the streets.

The city is urging parents, caregivers, and drivers alike to remain vigilant to make this Halloween both fun and safe for the community.
