Free Community Emergency Preparedness Fair

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a free Community Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3344 Reading Crest Ave., Reading.

The event will offer hands-on activities, demonstrations and information to help individuals and families prepare for a variety of emergencies. Topics will include creating 72-hour emergency and car kits, three-month food storage and budgeting, home evacuation planning, emergency communication and ham radio, water purification, fire extinguisher use, pet safety, insurance coverage, emotional resilience, alternative power sources and preparing for natural disasters such as flooding.

Additional activities will include Touch-a-Truck, Dutch oven cooking, a fire safety obstacle course, sandbag-filling races and demonstrations on making emergency bucket toilets.

A free hot dog lunch will be provided. Attendees who visit the various preparedness stations will also be entered for a chance to win emergency preparedness items for their homes.

The fair is free and open to the community and is designed to help residents prepare for emergencies ranging from personal situations, such as unemployment, to natural disasters and larger community emergencies.
