The Exeter Township School District said it will discontinue its traditional Homecoming bonfire after an incident during this year’s parade left at least one person struck by debris.
According to the district, the bonfire was lit by the Exeter Township Fire Department at the conclusion of the annual Homecoming Parade Thursday night and ignited with unexpected force.
At least one person was struck by debris and evaluated at the scene. The district said the person did not appear to have suffered serious injuries.
“We are grateful to all of the emergency responders and bystanders who quickly offered assistance and help,” the district said in a statement.
Following the incident, district officials said bonfires will no longer be held during future Homecoming Parades.
“We recognize that the bonfire is a tradition in the community and that this decision may be unpopular for some; however, we will always prioritize safety for our students, staff, families and community members,” the district said.
