Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Alert issued: Friday, May 16 2025 - 04:28 PM

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Berks County and surrounding areas until 11:30 a.m. today, Friday, May 16, 2025. The warning was announced by the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, as a line of strong storms moves through the region.

At 10:24 a.m., radar indicated severe thunderstorms stretching from near Hazleton to McKeansburg to Strausstown, moving east at 40 mph. These storms are capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, which could cause minor damage to vehicles, as well as damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines.

In addition to hail and damaging winds, the storms are bringing heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, as well as frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Residents are urged to move indoors immediately and stay in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

The National Weather Service reminds drivers not to attempt to travel through flooded roadways. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Stay tuned to local alerts and be prepared for changing conditions as the storms continue to move through Berks County.
