The CDC reported, in 2020 suicide was the 12th leading cause of death for all ages. Anxiety over academic achievement, social media pressures, economic pressures on families, and the current political polarization of American society are just some of the contributing factors leading to suicide.
Business and community leaders across Berks County are collaborating to decrease suicide rates among residents. These leaders, organizations, and businesses are hosting a free suicide prevention event on September 10th at Miller Center for the Arts featuring Kevin Hines, one of only thirty-six people (less than 1%) to survive the fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin will share his recovery journey and how to maintain mental wellness living a fulfilling life.
Kevin is a storyteller, best-selling author, global public speaker, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. He attempted to take his life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival, including a sea lion that kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived. Now, Kevin travels the world to share his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience.
Kevin will begin his presentation at 6 p.m. followed by a reception from 7-8 p.m. Free copies of Kevin’s book, The Art of Being Broken, are available for everyone, and he will sign copies at the reception.
