Update: NWS confirms brief tornado touched down in Amity Township with 70 mph winds

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a weak tornado touched down in Berks County Tuesday afternoon.

According to a preliminary storm survey, an EF-0 tornado with peak winds of 70 mph occurred in Amity Township around 4:47 p.m. on July 1.

In addition to the tornado, straight-line winds associated with a rear-flank downdraft also reached 70 mph as the storm moved northeast toward Boyertown and the north side of Gilbertsville in Montgomery County.

The National Weather Service says more detailed information will be released later this evening or Thursday.
